76% of older people surveyed by Contact the Elderly (now Re-engage) say that Sunday is the loneliest day of the week.

Sunday is a day when many people spend time with families, when public services are reduced and local services are closed. This leaves many older people who live alone feeling lonely and isolated.

Contact the Elderly reveals this statistic, along with several others about the impact of loneliness on the lives of older people, in our latest Impact Report.

However, as our unique service of afternoon tea parties always takes place on Sundays, we are a charity making a major difference to the lives of thousands of older people across England, Scotland and Wales.

Contact the Elderly currently takes over 5,500 older people out to afternoon tea every month with the help of over 10,000 volunteers. Contact the Elderly surveyed both our older guests and volunteers about how the tea parties help reduce isolation and restore self-esteem, as well as bringing a stronger sense of community to the areas we operate in.

Our research reveals that older people enjoy food more when they eat in company and that volunteers feel happier as a result of being involved, amongst other insightful statistics.
