Winter Connections
Create a connection that lasts all year round.
As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, people tend to spend more time indoors and fewer moments with others. For older people, this can mean the opportunities to get out and about significantly reduce.
This time of year can be tricky for all of us, but for older people, it can be particularly challenging. Some people 75 and older go days without chatting to anyone. Those days can stretch into weeks, increasing feelings of disconnection, isolation, and loneliness.
But you can change that.
Just a few minutes of your time could help an older person feel connected, valued, and less lonely.
By picking up the phone to check in and chat once a week or so could mean an older person stays connected. They feel brighter, the days pass by more quickly, they feel involved in life outside their front door. And by the time spring comes around, they feel ready to get out and about once again.
If you can spare a few minutes each week to create a Winter Connection, sign up today as a Re-engage Call Companion volunteer.
The role is flexible, accessible, and can fit in with your lifestyle all year round, once winter’s over.
Let’s leave the final word to one of the older people using our Call Companion service:
I look forward to the contact from Re-engage each week. The person I speak to makes me feel in contact with the outside world and I find her easy to talk to.
