We’re celebrating our 60th anniversary!

2025 marks 60 years of Re-engage reducing loneliness in later life.

April 2025 marks 60 years since Re-engage – founded by Trevor Lyttleton in 1965 and initially known as ‘Contact’, then ‘Contact the Elderly’, before rebranding in 2019 – began its journey.

What started with a simple act of kindness has grown into a nationwide movement bringing companionship, friendship and connection into the lives of thousands of older people and volunteers. Since then, there have been millions of minutes of conversation, thousands of firm friendships formed, countless cups of tea and coffee poured, slices of cake enjoyed and so much more – all in the shared mission to tackle loneliness among older people.

The very first Re-engage tea party took place on 4 April 1965, making 2025 our diamond year. We’ll be marking this significant milestone throughout the year, reflecting on the past and planning for the future with special events, moments, and memories. We'll celebrate the people who make the magic happen – our volunteers – and share insights from the people who Re-engage exists to support – people aged 75 and older who attend a tea party, take part in an activity group, or enjoy chatting with a call companion.

We hope you’ll join us in our special year to learn more about who we are, what we do, why we do it, why it works – and how you can play a part in the future of Re-engage.
