Maggie was matched to Glenda in March 2023. The 82-year-old former cabin crew member shared how important the call companion chats are to her.
Maggie has lived on her own since the breakdown of her marriage in her late 20s. She has no family and is an only child. Her mum died when she was six and her father when she was 18. Maggie worked as cabin crew for British Airways until she retired at 55, after 32 years with the airline.
She has survived cancer and two knee operations which unfortnately weren't successful; this along with spine degeneration means Maggie is unable to walk more than a few yards. However, she manages to do some seated gardening.
Maggie said: “Glenda calls me once a week and it’s wonderful. I love speaking to her. We discuss just about everything - her family, music, art. There’s nothing we don’t talk about. Glenda is quite amazing, she's very empathetic and giving. The calls with her are very important to me. I always look forward to them.”
Glenda, 59, has been a housing management consultant since 1989 and is married to David. They live in Sussex and have five daughters in their 20s. Glenda often volunteers with charities supporting homeless people or at food banks - as well as being a call companion.
She explained: “I usually find ways to volunteer. I get satisfaction from knowing I have been able to help someone and make them happy.”
