I’m sure I’m not the only one transfixed by the sheer athleticism, grace, strength and determination of the athletes in the recent Winter Olympics. I’ve also felt moved by the way these sporting professionals at the top of their game support one another on and off the slopes and rinks, cheering on not only teammates, but competitors from other nations. I feel that this sense of spirit or creating a 'village’ broader than our immediate neighbours, is reflected in Re-engage and our volunteer community. A quote from one Olympic volunteer, Guiseppe Lui, says it all: “Life is made up of experiences, and volunteering allows you to enter worlds you would not otherwise encounter. It’s like travelling: it opens your mind and transforms you. If you can, try experiences that take you beyond your everyday routine. The rewards are significant.”
With these words in mind, I encourage you to consider volunteering with us and enter a world where you can help reduce loneliness in later life, creating meaningful conversations and a strong sense of community. Our roles are designed to fit around your existing commitments and are flexible to complement your lifestyle. Whether you’d like to be a Call Companion at the end of a phone for a weekly chat, help at our popular Flicks and Friends cinema clubs in Crosby, Edinburgh, and Llanfairfechan, arrange a social gathering, or help us assess the impact of our services, there’s something for everyone. All you need is a little time and a lot of heart to make a big difference.
You can browse our roles and apply today – imagine the feeling of helping an older person feel connected, cared about, and part of a community once again.
Thanks for being part of something really special!
