The community of Chesterfield came together to markto throw a magnificent Re-engage-inspired celebration of the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Tea party coordinator, Tom Oxley, spent months arranging the event, which was held at the Derbyshire market town’s IKON Church. Around 50 guests danced, sang, played bingo and enjoyed tea and cakes during the get together. Local singer Jessica Kate led renditions of war-time songs, including Vera Lynn’s famous 'We’ll Meet Again' with the Mayor of Chesterfield, Jenny Flood and Mayoress, Heather Hopkinson, joining in.

Tom, who has been a Re-engage volunteer for eight years, said: “It was a fantastic event. As soon as the first song started people were up and dancing and singing along.

“Everyone had a great time. Food, tea, cakes, balloons and other items were all donated by local businesses who really got involved. I put a callout on Facebook and the whole community came together to make it a fabulous day. I received invaluable help from several members of the church I attend, IKON Church in Chesterfield, where the event was also hosted. In particular, I’d like to thank Jane and Gavin Lloyd, Ruth Megahy, Dawn Harris, and Tracey Yeomans, as well as all the other volunteers whose efforts helped make the day such a success. I arranged for a Re-engage stall to be there and lots of people were asking about the charity and what it does. In fact, I believe two people have signed up to be volunteers.”

One of those who enjoyed the day told Tom he was “a very special person”, adding: “My dad enjoyed it. He’s got dementia but was able to tell me his experience of the war years which he’s never done before. He was six when the war started. Thanks to your kindness I’ve learned a lot about dad’s early years. We both had a fab afternoon.”
