One social prescriber shares how Re-engage plays a vital role in supporting lonely and isolated older people.

“Re-engage is top of my list for referring older adults who are lonely or isolated,” said Josephine, a Social Prescribing Linkworker, who works with the Alliance of Sutton Practices in Sutton Coldfield. She continued: “Most of the older adults I support mention lack of transport as a barrier. Knowing that Re-engage offers transport gives them hope that they can socialise again.”

Josephine sees first hand how social prescribing helps address non-medical challenges that affect the wellbeing of older people she supports. She explained: “The impact of social prescribing can be huge. It improves mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression; it helps with physical health through exercise and weight management. And it supports people in practical ways, such as financial guidance, housing, and employment.

“One of the biggest needs I see is for social connection, and Re-engage has been essential in fulfilling this for my patients. The tea parties and friendly telephone calls have been a lifeline for many.”

For Josephine, the simplicity of referring people to Re-engage is a key advantage. She shared: “The referral process is really easy and not lengthy, which makes it much simpler to complete with patients during our initial call."

Since learning about Re-engage from a colleague, Josephine has been making referrals regularly for more than three years.  “I came across Re-engage through a colleague at a meeting, did some research, and contacted them about the referral process. Since then, I’ve had no problems with referring, and the team is very responsive when I follow up.”

Josephine recalled one older woman she referred just before Christmas: “She lives alone, with no family nearby, and really wanted to get out but couldn’t manage public transport. When I told her about Re-engage and the tea parties, she was so excited. She went to her first one and then to the Christmas event – she was really looking forward to it. When I spoke to her after Christmas, I could hear the difference in her voice. She was so much happier.”

Looking ahead, Josephine would love to receive more updates on the people she refers, and she encourages other social prescribers to make use of Re-engage’s services: “It would be great to get feedback on their journey with Re-engage – just a quick update on how they’re getting on would be great. Re-engage has made a real impact on the people I support. It’s an invaluable service that helps older adults reconnect with their community.”

We'd like to extend our heartfelt thanks to professionals like Josephine who help ensure older people can access the companionship and support they deserve.
