New volunteer Ruth steps into 'perfect' role as a call companion.
Mum of three Ruth Mitchell signed up as a call companion after seeing Re-engage on Good Morning Britain’s 1 Million Minutes TV campaign.
“I saw it and thought ‘that looks great, I’d like to get involved’. I love people and love talking to them so it’s perfect for me,” she said.
“I’m a part-time dance teacher so I have some spare time to make the calls – and I can even do it in my pyjamas!”
Ruth made several calls to Dina in her first few weeks as a volunteer, allowing them to take their time and get to know each other.
“She has carers but is very lonely and can’t get out,” added Ruth, 41. “The calls are important to her and I want her to know that I’m here.”
Ruth, who lives in Ayr, Scotland, with husband Jason and children Charlotte, 13, Danielle, 11 and eight-year-old Alfie, is a professionally trained dancer who has also donesome modelling.
She studied for a degree at the Midlands Academy of Dance and Drama before spending six years touring with M & M Theatrical Productions which staged a variety of shows at schools, care homes, community theatres and hotels.
Ruth, who was brought up in Bedford with her three brothers, then spent time as a childminder before going back to dancing in Ayr, where Jason was working as a theatre technician.
“I really love helping someone who is lonely,” said Ruth. “I’ve committed to a year of making the calls and I think I’m going to enjoy it.”
