BBC presenter Sara Cox is supporting our campaign to launch 200 tea party groups across the UK to help older people who feel isolated.
This year we have been inundated with requests to join our volunteer-led social groups.
Sara, who is a volunteer driver and host for her local tea party group said: “The tea parties are a crucial social event for so many older people, some of whom rarely leave their homes.
“There are inevitably some who may have lost their confidence but fortunately many more are making the effort to socialise again, which is so vital and something we must continue to encourage.
“I know from my experience that once they get to a tea party, they have a wonderful time, chatting and eating cake. It really lifts them and brings something extra special to what can be, otherwise, solitary lives. They really feel they are part of their local community.
“That’s why these tea parties are so important and why I’m encouraging anyone who can help start a group to do so. They won’t regret it.”
Re-engage tea parties are typically held one Sunday a month and each group has around four to eight older guests, a volunteer coordinator, hosts and drivers. Each month a host will provide their home as the venue, serving refreshments including sandwiches, tea and cake, while volunteer drivers take the guests to and from the venue. Our tea parties are a vital source of companionship for older people. For many, they are the only social reason they have to leave the house. At the tea party, they mix with guests and volunteers of all ages, connecting them with their local community.
If you’re interested in joining an existing tea party group, you can find out about current volunteer tea party vacancies in your area by visiting our online map.
"Our volunteers also get a great deal out of organising these events. They tell us how much they enjoy them and we appreciate their dedication and the amazing difference they make in their communities."
