Throughout his life, John, now 86, faced discrimination for being gay, and everyday life could be very challenging. But as an ardent campaigner for equality, John organised Pride marches and lobbied for a change in the law around homosexuality.

“I was very politically active when I was younger,” said John, a former magazine editor, who lives in London. “I think that’s what magnifies my isolation now.

“I look back at the days when I was out marching, being involved in a theatrical group and giving poetry recitals and here I am stuck in my third floor flat with the lift out of service.

“Recently I’ve become very isolated, not just because I can’t get out, but most of my friends have died. So, the weekly calls from my Rainbow Call Companion are important. They’re very cheery and as we are both gay we have a commonality.

“We can talk about the old days without feeling awkward. Even though we come from different backgrounds we understand each other and that’s a positive. It’s good to feel comfortable in conversation and to have a laugh.”
