Our annual survey is a valuable opportunity to hear directly from older people, volunteers, and referrers involved with Re-engage. It provides insight into people’s experiences and perspectives over the previous 12 months.

This year, we received over 1,000 responses from older people using Re-engage services, and more than 700 responses from our volunteers. This feedback helps us understand the real-life impact of Re-engage, and how we can continue to grow and improve. We use an evidence-based approach in all areas of our work; the data we collect helps us make informed decisions about our services, and how we can continue to reduce isolation and loneliness in people aged 75 and over. Hearing directly from those we support, and those who support us, ensures our work remains impactful and meaningful.

One of the most powerful themes from this year’s annual survey is the sense of mutual benefit; there is a real feeling of 'giving and receiving’, with older people gaining social connections and support, and volunteers gaining fulfilment, purpose, and joy.

97% of Re-engage volunteers feel like they’re making a difference and  81% of older people feel that joining Re-engage has had a positive impact on their life.

94% of volunteers feel like they’re giving something back, and 88% of older people telling us they feel being involved with Re-engage gives them something to look forward to.

Our survey results show that we are also having a positive impact on happiness, with three quarters of older people (75%) and volunteers (74%) reporting they feel happier because of being involved.  88% of older people, and 85% of volunteers rated their experience of Re-engage as ‘Excellent’ or ‘Good’.

One particularly insightful finding was around older people’s experiences of online access. Internet access has increased in the past few years for people 75 and older, with 65% reporting they have access to the internet, and 33% not having access. In 2021, 51% of older people said they did not have access to the internet. However, while more older people accessing our services report say use the internet, just over one fifth reported using it frequently.

The findings from this year’s Re-engage annual survey demonstrate we are supporting the creation of social connection across the UK, with volunteers and older people describing reciprocal relationships full of joy and a renewed sense of purpose. Thank you to everyone who took part in our survey - your voices are helping to shape Re-engage, and ensure we’re offering the best services and experiences, moving us further towards our mission of reducing social isolation and isolation for people aged 75 and over.
