We have launched a new guide to exploring the impact of loneliness and isolation on older people. It has been designed to help local authorities, health boards and organisations understand and respond to loneliness in later life.

Released during Loneliness Awareness Week 2026, the new interactive ‘heatmap’ provides local authority data relating to people aged 75 and over. An accompanying report - The Prevalence and Causes of Loneliness and Social Isolation in Older People (75+) across the United Kingdom - features research to highlight the risk factors linked to loneliness and social isolation.

The heatmap features Re-engage data showing the percentage of older people who feel lonely, as well as census statistics on poor health, people living alone, and deprivation. It also links to academic research about loneliness undertaken by 11 of our Research 100 students. The map is the first of its kind and is designed to support public bodies working with and supporting older people in England, Scotland and Wales.

Jess Doyle, Re-engage Head of Policy, Research and Consultancy, said: “The damage that loneliness and isolation can cause is well documented, but until now, we have not been able to pinpoint the number of older people affected and the areas where they live.

“Our map gives a holistic view of loneliness as we age, highlighting how individuals, communities and organisations can work together to end social isolation in later life. It’s an important tool which will be annually updated and which we hope will help local authorities and health boards when they devise their loneliness policies.”

The free heatmap is an important step in our aim of reducing loneliness among older people by influencing policymakers. It follows the launch of our Re-engage (2026) Care on Hold report which highlights the challenges older people experience when trying to get a GP appointment.

Jess added: “This has been a huge piece of work. We have pulled together many parts of the jigsaw to present a clearer picture of loneliness in later life.”
