Having the time to discover his own artistic flair is one of the benefits of retirement for Alan, 83, who worked as an art teacher for many years.
This time of life also brought into sharp focus Alan’s isolation, but thanks to his Re-engage Rainbow Call Companion, Andrea, Alan has consistent friendship in his life.
After graduating with an art degree, Alan taught at a secondary school, in adult education and later at a college near Trieste, Italy, where he was so highly regarded he became Artist in Residence for a year. More recently he has exhibited in his home town in the south of England.
Alan explained: “When I was teaching I was not developing as an artist.. But now I have the time to become the painter I want to be. I suppose the fire was lit for me when I was at school. I can remember doing a drawing when I was five-years-old which really impressed everyone. That’s where everything starts – from good drawing. But I love all mediums – the magic of watercolour, spontaneity of acrylic and the quality of oils.”
Alan, who joined the Rainbow Call Companion service earlier in 2026, mentioned his artwork to Andrea, who was delighted to view them.
Andrea, 36, said: “They are really beautiful, the technique is very good.”
Alan was referred to Re-engage when he told a welfare worker that after living alone for 30 years, he needed support. He told us: “As you get older, friends die and you become isolated You can be surrounded by all kinds of stimulating things but still feel totally alone. Sometimes it feels easier to just pull up the drawbridge. It really struck me when I had a recent conversation with Andrea, I realised just how isolated I am.
“He’s a delightful young man and we have a lot in common so I’m enjoying the calls. It’s nice to know there are organisations out there like yours with people who are willing to help.”
Graphic designer Andrea also began volunteering with Re-engage early in 2026. He said: “I was off work and wanted to do something meaningful. “That’s when I discovered Re-engage.
“It’s good to talk to Alan and he says the calls help him so I’m pleased about that. Volunteering makes me happy and relaxed so I would recommend it to anyone.”
