University student Robyn has known about Re-engage tea parties since she was five years old; her parents, Simon and Maria, began hosting the social occasions once a year at their home in the south of England, in honour of Robyn’s grandmother after she died.

And now, as a young adult, she enjoys helping with the preparation and serving cakes and sandwiches to the older people she has come to know and respect. Robyn explained: “It’s a privilege to listen to the stories of our guests and saddening to hear about the levels of isolation older adults can face.

“It’s always a delight to see returning guests who I have built a bond with over the years and lovely to meet new people and help to make them feel less alone. When the tea party starts, you can see some are a little apprehensive, but when it’s time to go home, they are disappointed because they want the chat and socialising to go on.

“I love volunteering as it allows me to give back to the community and brighten someone’s day. It is important now more than ever to support the community around you. If you are thinking about volunteering, please do it. You will make a difference. Hosting tea parties with Re-engage is always a major highlight of my summer.”
