Congratulations to the founder of Re-engage, Trevor Lyttleton, who has been honoured for more than 60 years of supporting older lonely people. 

Trevor, 90, was presented with a Lifetime Achiever Award at the 2026 National Diversity Awards, beating nine other nominees to pick up the coveted title in a glittering ceremony in Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral. 

There were more than 153,000 nominations and 153 finalists in the awards which have been running for 15 years and celebrate the great work being done by individuals and organisations committed to creating a more inclusive society. 

Trevor, who launched the charity more than 60 years ago as Contact the Elderly is already an MBE and recently won a Guiness World Record for having the longest career as chair of a charity. 

After receiving his award from TV and radio presenter, and author, Konnie Huq, he said: “When I founded Contact the Elderly - now Re-engage - in 1965, I never imagined that bringing lonely older people and volunteers together over tea would grow into a multicultural nationwide movement. This award belongs equally to the thousands of volunteers, supporters, trustees and staff whose kindness and dedication made it possible. 

“Over 60 years, I have learnt that loneliness does not discriminate, and neither should compassion. I have always tried to live by one simple principle: “Never let our old people down.” 

“Finally, thank you to Re-engage and supporters for nominating me and all who have shared this remarkable journey across generations, faiths and cultures. This honour belongs to you all.”
